Letter from Richard 'Dick' Konter to Ruth Vipond Ede (sister of St. Clair Ede and employee at the Edes Company).


Byrd First Antarctic Expedition 1928-30: One long envelope prepared by Richard Konter, bearing a 2 cent stamp with cancelled S.S. ''City of New York'' Feb. 19 1930 at Little America, including expedition and Auxiliary Barque cachets marks. It is unknown how many of these letters were mailed to various people around the world.

Richard Konter was a seaman on a ship called "City of New York. This ship carried Admiral Richard Byrd to the "Little America - Antarctica" expedition. Mr. Konter, is also known as Ukulele Dick, he was the music recreation officer for this expedition. Richard Konter also brought music records and pinola rolls (piano rolls) on the expedition for the crew to enjoy.
