Origin of Surname

Ede (or Edes) surname has many different origins.

The first appearance of the surname dates back to Old Norse times and was pronounced "Eda", which was a goddess in mythology meaning strife and wealth.

"Eda" was also a female nickname for "Edith" which deprives from the pre 7th Century Olde English name "Eadgyth"

Another origin states the name "Ede" are from the Anglo-Saxon tribes in Britain and it's name deprives from the son of "Ede", as in "Edison" which was later shortened to "Eade".

Yet another source claims the name comes from Middle English "Edwy" and from Old English "Eadwig"  (Ead means prosperity and wig means war).
