Obituary
David Ede Dies Sunday Morning
Telegraph Herald, October 1924
Prominent local business man passes away quietly in sleep.
Funeral serve tomorrow

Gained prominence in business world on two occasions before coming to Dubuque.

David Ede, President of Edes Robe Tanning company passed away Sunday morning at his home 480 Alpine Street. Mr. Ede had been prominent in the business affairs of Dubuque for many years and had impressed his character on all who knew him.  He stood for absolute integrate in business and his success was due largely to his principle, which he never violated. The firm that bears his name is one of the most widely known in the central west and the largest engaged in the tanning of heavy hides for furs.  The Ede’s Robe Tanning Company is a monument to Mr. Ede’s personal character.

Before coming to Dubuque in 1896 he had twice before risen to prominence in the business world. First at Winnipeg where he went though the boom of 1881 and 1882 accumulated a considerable fortune which was lost in the depression that followed.  Young and too impatient to wait for the country to return to a normal state, he sacrificed his interests and moved to Sioux City, where he went through the boom of 1888 and 1889, being associated with Garrison and Hedges in the development work carried on at that time. His work in this connection was a secretary of the Leeds Improvement and Land Company in the building up of Leeds, Iowa, which afterward became a large suburb of Sioux City.  Misfortune again fell to his lot in the panic of 1892, when he again sacrificed his interests and gave up real estate and speculation of good to enter the manufacturing business.

His losses during his earlier business life, however, made a deep impression on him and so he was always known to Dubuquers as a quiet retiring kindly man living the golden rule and devoting his life to his family and business. Those who knew him best realized that he had no ambition to accumulate a fortune.  He gave his money away almost as fast as he made it.  His benefactions were many and often times on such a scale as to make it necessary for him to be saving on his own expenditures. He believed in giving to the point where he could feel it.  During the last ten years his eye sight failed him to such an extent that he kept away from public places for fear of not recognizing a friend or acquaintance.

Born in Canada on January 29, 1846, he spent his young days in his native country. When 21 years of age he came to the United States and located in Delaware County, Iowa, where he engaged in farming. In 1874 he returned to Canada, making his residence in Winnipeg before Manitoba had been opened by railroads. His first trip was by railroad was to Moorhead, Minnesota and then in a small steamboat to Winnipeg. Shortly afterwards the railroad was extended north and Winnipeg soon became a thriving frontier.

In 1873, he married Miss Margaret Tuer of Bownmanville, Ontario. Four children were born to this union, one of whom died at the age of three months. The other three are still living here in Dubuque. He leaves his three children, St. Clair Ede, Mrs. Olive Lytle and Miss Ruth Ede. Besides many friends and business associates to mourn his passing.

During Mr. Ede’s lifetime, he had scarcely a day’s sickness; however since the passing of his wife on August 12, 1921, he has failed in strength steadily, but still retained his calm, quiet and loving manner.  Saturday evening he went to sleep calmly as usual and did not wake up.  He passed away as calmly as he had lived, without a pain or regret.

The services will be held at the family residence at Alpine Street at 3 o’clock Tuesday.
